Care
The commitment and responsibility is for a lifetime!
Patricia Zerbini grew up with elephants. The day she decided to take the responsibility of caring for them came in 1980, and she has done so 24/7 ever since. She would like to let you know a little of what this entails.
The Work
Never ending. They must be watched and cared for 24 hours a day, every day, in sunshine and in rain; weekdays, weekends and holidays; regardless of fatigue or illness. They are always in need of something. It is very much like raising children that remain toddlers.
The Permits
We are federally regulated and permitted by the U.S.D.A. (United States Department of Agriculture) and the C.I.T.E.S. (Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species) as well as by each state's Fish and Game, Fish and Wildlife, Department of Health, Humane Society, Animal Control, and local city officials. When in Canada, we are under Canadian and U.S. regulations; each province and city, like the states in the U.S., has its own regulations. We are inspected daily by one or more of these government, state or local officials.
The Travel
When off site our animals travel in first class equipment. Each unit is specially built. These units must be in top condition, not only to safeguard our animals, but also because we are controlled by the U.S. D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) and Canadian D.O.T, and for this we have professional drivers and mechanics. Our housing for the animals is also inspected routinely for cleanliness, climate, space, and comfort.
The Staff
The entire staff is dedicated and works very hard to bring you these magnificent creatures.
The Cost
Average cost per day per elephant: $200.00
